Lyreco has announced that is has joined the New York Declaration on Forests (NYDF) as part of its ongoing sustainability efforts.
The reseller’s endorsement of the NYDF comes within the framework of the 2019 United Nations Climate Summit and will see it develop some new initiatives in addition to its existing environmental policies and actions. These will include:
·the integration of forest management into its Climate Policy
·ongoing analysis with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) to start an innovative FSC ecosystem services project
·participation in the new multi-stakeholder platform on deforestation, forest degradation and forest generation that was announced recently by the European Commission, thereby encouraging the use of products from deforestation-free supply chains
The NYDF was established in 2014 and is currently endorsed by over 200 entities, including more than 50 governments, over 50 of the world’s biggest companies and more than 50 influential civil society and indigenous organisations. By committing to the ten goals of the declaration, endorsers have agreed to work towards halving tropical deforestation by 2020 and ending it by 2030. The NYDF also calls for the restoration of 150 million hectares of degraded landscapes and forestlands by 2020 and 350 million hectares by 2030.
However, the NYDF now says there is little evidence that these goals are on track, and achieving the 2020 targets is likely impossible. In a 2019 update report, the organisation admitted that tropical deforestation has “continued at an unsustainable pace since 2014 […as…] the short-term profits of forest conversion still trump the long-term benefits of forest conservation and restoration in many land-use decisions”.
