Mitsubishi Pencil Company UK, commonly known as uni-ball, has introduced plastic-free packaging for products sold at stationery retailer Ryman.

The company said every effort had been made – from sourcing to manufacture – to ensure the packaging reduces its carbon footprint. For example, the pack’s board is made from 100% PEFC-certified product, vegetable-based inks and a non-toxic, water-based blister varnish have been used, and the print process has been designed to minimise waste and chemical use.

Paul Smith, Director of Sales & Marketing, Mitsubishi Pencil Company UK, said: “Following two years of consumer insight, research and development, we are delighted to launch our new packaging with Ryman as part of our back-to-school-and-college campaign.”

Kypros Kyprianou, CEO of Ryman, said that the retailer welcomed this kind of initiative. “The new packaging was well received by our customers during a recent trial and we look forward to welcoming many more sustainable developments in our sector that will help us to be part of the difference,” he stated.

While the new packaging is currently available for the company’s key products, it will eventually be expanded to cover the full uni-ball pen range.
