There are some very gratifying developments: The total turnover of the PBS sector in 2016 rose by 0.5 percent to 12.54 billion euros. The school business developed positively, which rose by 5.8 percent, as measured by the sales of the months June to September. The number of pupils has bottomed out with 8.3 million pupils, and the number of new increases rose by two percent in 2016.
 
Thanks to the unbroken coloring trend, the painting and drawing sector made a jump in sales of 80 percent to 45 million euros. Both of these factors are particularly beneficial for the sales of the stationary specialist shops. Felt and fiber writers recorded growth of one percent, while in writing instruments they were 1.2 percent higher than in the previous year, or 823 million euros.
 
"Creativity and individuality will continue to be a trend theme in 2017," explained HBS Managing Director Thomas Grothkopp. "Shutting down in the form of a creative time out is a popular means in the omnipresent everyday hectic, for ten minutes or even to the hobby."
 
The increasing degree of digitization and the trend towards mobile devices has led to a 5.3 per cent decline in the demand for technical consumables such as ink and toner and a two per cent drop in demand for office communications paper. On the other hand, the field of computer equipment stabilized. Here, double-digit growth rates were required to meet the demand requirements of companies in the previous year. The conversion to electronic invoices and duplex printing reinforce this trend, which saves costs and helps to conserve resources.
 
The share of ink printers is growing by 13 percent each year at the expense of laser technology. Modern business inject printers are becoming more powerful and growing into the market segment dominated by laser printers.
